Square Pipe Weight Formula (SHS)

Learn how to calculate square hollow section (SHS) pipe weight using the standard engineering formula. Includes worked examples and IS:4923 reference data.

The Formula

Square Pipe (SHS) Weight Formula
Weight (kg/m) = (4W − 4t) × t × 0.00785
W = Width (mm) — all sides equal | t = Wall Thickness (mm) | 0.00785 = steel density constant | IS:4923

Worked Example — 50×50×3 SHS

Step 1: Weight/m = (4×50 − 4×3) × 3 × 0.00785
Step 2: = (200 − 12) × 3 × 0.00785
Step 3: = 188 × 3 × 0.00785 = 4.43 kg/m
For 6m length: 4.43 × 6 = 26.6 kg per pipe
