MS Pipe Weight Formula

Learn the standard formula to calculate Mild Steel (MS) pipe weight per meter. Includes derivation, worked examples, and IS:1239 / IS:3589 reference data.

The Formula

Weight (kg/m) = (OD − t) × t × 0.02466

OD = Outer Diameter (mm) | t = Wall Thickness (mm) | 0.02466 = π × 7850 ÷ 1,000,000 | IS:1239 / IS:3589

Worked Example — 2″ MS Pipe (60.3mm OD × 3.65mm wall)

Step 1: Weight/m = (60.3 − 3.65) × 3.65 × 0.02466

Step 2: = 56.65 × 3.65 × 0.02466

Step 3: = 5.10 kg/m

For 6m pipe: 5.10 × 6 = 30.6 kg per pipe
