GI Pipe Weight Formula

Learn how to calculate Galvanized Iron (GI) pipe weight per meter. Includes zinc coating factor, worked examples, and IS:1239 reference data.

The Formula

GI Pipe Weight Formula
Weight (kg/m) = (OD − t) × t × 0.02466
OD = Outer Diameter (mm) | t = Wall Thickness (mm) | Density: ~7850 kg/m³ (IS:1239) | Add ~2.5% for zinc coating
🟢 GI pipe uses the same base formula as MS pipe. The zinc coating adds approximately 2–3% to the final weight. For precise GI weight, multiply the result by 1.025.

Worked Example — 2″ GI Pipe (60.3mm OD × 3.65mm wall)

Step 1: Base weight = (60.3 − 3.65) × 3.65 × 0.02466
Step 2: = 56.65 × 3.65 × 0.02466 = 5.10 kg/m
Step 3: With zinc: 5.10 × 1.025 = 5.23 kg/m (GI)
For 6m pipe: 5.23 × 6 = 31.4 kg per pipe
